Halloween With Braces
The tremendous amount of Halloween candy kids return home with after trick-or-treating is something your dentist considers a real ‘fright fest’. But because kids should be able to enjoy collecting goodies like kids have been doing for ages in America at the end of October, your local Dallas prosthodontist, Dr. Rodriguez would like to let you know what candies are the worst for your teeth. This way, if you are hosting any Halloween candies or passing out treats, you can choose other types of candies which aren’t quite so harmful to teeth.
Candies are loaded with sugar that can mix with bacteria in the mouth, forming a substance on the teeth called plaque. The bacteria in plaque can develop into harmful acids, which can dissolve the protective enamel on teeth to cause tooth decay or cavities. And if tooth decay is not treated, it can lead to tooth pain, infection and even total tooth loss. This is why it’s important to limit your consumption of candy and to brush your teeth well after indulging in sweet treats and snacks.
Worst Types of Candy For Your Teeth
- Caramels
- Taffy
- Sour candy
- Powdery candy
- Hard candies including jaw-breakers
- Gummy candy
- Candied and caramel apples
Some Better Alternatives
Instead of offering loads of candy to guests when hosting Halloween parties, consider some better snack alternatives that aren’t so harmful the the teeth such as:
- Fresh fruits like apples, pears, strawberries and melons
- Low fat yogurt or cottage cheese
- Unbuttered popcorn
- Seeds and nuts
- Baked tortilla chips
- Raw veggies like celery and carrots
